LOS ANGELES — Nintendo had a surprise for Zelda fans during its E3 digital event.

Triforce Heroes is a new installment in action-adventure The Legend of Zelda series for the 3DS. It supports three-person cooperative play, where players can create totems with themselves to solve puzzles. They can also use different outfits on their characters to get new abilities. It comes out this fall.

The last Zelda game on 3DS was A Link Between Worlds, a follow-up to the Super Nintendo classic A Link to the Past. Zelda has had multiplayer games before, notably Four Swords for Game Boy Advance and Four Swords Adventures on GameCube. However, those games had single-player elements, while Nintendo says that Triforce Heroes will focus on cooperation.
