The Nintendo World Championships 2015 are getting real.
Nintendo announced today the qualifying venues for its upcoming World Championships tournament. The Japanese gaming giant first ran a World Championships back in 1990 — resulting in one of the rarest NES cartridges around — and it’s bringing the tournament back this year. Nintendo is hoping that the nostalgic special event will help it build on its growing Wii U and 3DS hardware sales momentum.

Players will then compete in three score-based challenges on the Nintendo 3DS game Ultimate NES Remix, taking in the classic titles Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Dr. Mario.
The top scorer from each regional competition will head to Los Angeles for a multi-round final on June 14, during the week of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) gaming trade show.
Nintendo’s also adding eight competitors of its own to the World Championships, which it will reveal in the “near future.” Sounds interesting.
