The publisher announced today that it is bringing back the Nintendo World Championships as part of its presence at the Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show in June. If you want to compete, you need to head to select Best buy locations around the country on May 30 to participate in the qualifying tournaments. Nintendo will bring the winners to the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on June 14 for the finals along with some invitational players. The event is open for the public to attend, and it will also stream live online. This will lead into the company’s E3 “digital event” on June 16 at 9 a.m. Pacific time, which will focus on Nintendo’s new games.

This is the second year in a row that Nintendo is holding a special event at the Nokia theater for fans. During E3 2014, the publisher held a special tournament for its upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Wii U fighting game. That drew a huge amount of attention from fans both in person and online.
Now, the company is obviously trying to re-create that success by bringing back an event that may have even broader appeal.
The first Nintendo World Championships happened in 1990, and they featured competitive events for Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris. Nintendo even made a special cartridge that featured unique versions of the games. That cartridge is now one of the rarest and most sought-after games in the world.
No word yet on whether winners of this new Nintendo World Championships will get special cartridges … but I sure hope so!
