Nintendo announced a new property for the 3DS today.
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. (which is its final name) is the latest new franchise from Nintendo. The 3DS game features a steam-powered London with airships and cars that run on hot water. Players take control of various superheroes with suits that also run on steam. Fire Emblem developer Hitoshi Yamagami is leading the development along with Advance Wars developer Intelligent Systems. Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. combines steampunk visuals with the style of American comic books.
It is due out in 2015.
Like Advance Wars and Fire Emblem, the combat is turn-based, but it isn’t a continuation of either of those franchises. It also combines elements of third-person shooters.
Intelligent Systems wants to remove some of the abstraction between players and strategy games. To accomplish that, it is using the third-person perspective for Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. The camera is behind your characters, and you can aim your weapon in real time — but you can only move a limited number of squares per turn.
Nintendo gathered the industry together in a room to show off the game, but it will share a lot more with fans tomorrow on its streaming video show.
Tomorrow's #Nintendo Treehouse: Live @ #E3 will feature a demo of the new Nintendo IP being announced tonight.
