Valve has officially expanded into nongaming software. The company’s Steam digital-download service now offers products that aid in 3D modeling and photo editing instead of just zombie-killing and hat-wearing.
GamesBeat reported back in July that Valve was looking to diversify the selection in its virtual store. That plan has come to fruition.
Here is the short list of all the software available now on Steam:
- ArtRage Studio Pro
- CameraBag2
- GameMaker: Studio
- 3D-Coat
- 3DMark Vantage
- 3DMark 11
Valve is celebrating this launch by offering a 10-percent discount on all the aforementioned products. That brings the most expensive item, 3D-Coat, down from $99.99 to $89.10.
The Bellvue, Wash.-based company is applying much of the great Steam functionality that made the service popular to this new aspect of its business. Many of the launch titles will feature automatic updating and Steam Cloud support. That means users can save their work to the cloud while at the office and automatically pick it up on their home machine.
For Half-Life 3 conspiracy theorists, the number “3” appears in the title of three separate products on the Steam nongaming software page. That’s probably significant.
