The cloud just grew.
Onlive’s cloud-streaming service is now running in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Ireland. Previously, the subscription-based platform was available in the U.S., U.K., and Canada.
“Since day one, we’ve seen a sizeable chunk of traffic from these regions because of their great connectivity and engaged gamer community,” said Bruce Grove, OnLive’s general manager, in a press release sent to GamesBeat. “That interest has continued to grow, and we’ve completed the network operations necessary to deliver full services in these regions. Expect more announcements in the very near future.”
OnLive debuted in 2010. It streams games processed elsewhere and delivers them to game consoles, PCs, and mobiles devices; this is how cloud gaming works. It enables players to run games that normally wouldn’t work on their computers. The company has had its problems, notably in 2012 when it ran out of funding. The service relaunched this year with a revamped infrastructure.
OnLive was one of the first to get into the business, but others have since joined the fray. PlayStation has its own service, PlayStation Now, that streams games on devices such as the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation TV.
