A recently announced virtual reality open platform welcomes several new supporters.
The Open Source Virtual Reality ecosystem now has backing from 38 members as of Feb. 10, adding 13 new supporters such as software companies SoftKinetic and Sonic VR. These new additions join the group’s initial backers, which includes input device manufacturers Virtuix and LeapMotion and game developers Techland (Dying Light) and Gearbox Software (Borderlands).
Announced at the 2015 International CES, the group aims to standardize both the creation and use of VR software and hardware under a single platform. Gaming hardware manufacturer Razer and pro-grade VR hardware maker Sensics will continue to support the growing OSVR collective with the partnership’s Hacker Dev Kit VR device and software, a $200 kit that launches this June.
“The reception of OSVR exceeded even our own expectations and we’re working through numerous partner requests since CES,” says Min-Liang Tan, Razer cofounder and CEO in a statement. “Being able to bring together companies doing amazing work in all areas of virtual reality can accelerate consumer-ready devices and improve overall user experiences.”
New OSVR Supporters include: 3DRudder, Cyberith, Impulsonic, Jaunt, Lucidscape, Pixel Titans, SoftKinectic, Sonic VR, Tactical Haptics, Tammeka Games, VisiSonics, VR Bits, and VR Union.
Razer also announces the OSVR Academia Program, which will provide 10 free Hacker Dev Kits and access to the OSVR source code to eligible universities with full virtual reality labs. Applications to the program can be submitted at the OSVR webpage.
