Another month, another million: Sony‘s latest gaming box is continuing to sell.
The company announced that it has sold more than 7 million PlayStation 4s around the world as of April 6. That’s up from 6 million at the start of March and 4.2 million in January. That means Sony is moving approximately 1 million PS4s each month. The company likely got a boost in March from the release of its first big exclusive of the year, Infamous: Second Son.

The PS4 debuted in the U.S. on Nov. 15 for $400. It is now available in 78 countries around the world. The system is also regularly outselling its most direct competitor, Microsoft’s Xbox One, in the States, according to industry-tracking firm The NPD Group.
The PS4 is still somewhat difficult to find in stores, and Sony once again acknowledged that it isn’t meeting demand.
“The PS4 journey has just begun,” said House. “And although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers, and surpassing the wildest expectations of gamers by delivering new user experiences that inspire and engage. We look forward to unveiling many of these experiences to our fans in the coming months.”
Sony’s latest home console continues to outpace its predecessors in terms of unit sales. From its launch through the end of its first March, the PlayStation 3 had only moved 3.5 million systems. The PS4 is double that in the same amount of time.
Many expect the Xbox One to present the biggest challenge to PS4 in March thanks to the launch of the sci-fi shooter Titanfall from developer Respawn Entertainment. That anticipated game debuted on March 11 for Xbox One and PC, and Microsoft signed an agreement with publisher Electronic Arts to keep it off of Sony and Nintendo platforms.
We’ll likely have some idea of how well Titanfall and the next consoles performed last month when NPD reports its results for March tomorrow.
