Sony is upgrading the operating system on the PlayStation 4 today, but many gamers are reporting issues with the patch.
The PS4’s 2.0 update is available to download now, but you might want to hold off on downloading it. Gamers on forums like NeoGAF have run into problems with the latest version of the OS. Some people are having difficulties connecting to apps like YouTube or Netflix. Others cannot get their purchased games to start. Many more PS4 owners are reporting that they cannot sign into PlayStation Network.
“We’re aware of issues reported by some PS4 users following the release of PS4’s latest system software update, v 2.00,” a Sony spokesperson told GamesBeat. “We’re investigating these issues and will provide an update once we have more information.”
Of course, issues like these often occur when platform holders introduce big updates to their systems, and it’s likely that this is only affecting a small percentage of PS4 owners. Still, GamesBeat’s own managing editor, Jason Wilson, had troubles connecting to apps. He even found that navigating menus would freeze the entire OS for up to 30 seconds at a time while things loaded.
This update is one of the biggest yet for the PlayStation 4. It introduces themes, the USB Music Player, and YouTube integration. The marquee feature is SharePlay, which enables you to invite a friend to virtually play a game with you. They don’t even have to own the game. The experience is like having someone sitting on a digital couch right next to you. If you pass the controller to them, they can beat a difficult mission — or you can even play local multiplayer where you friend controls player two remotely.
