Pokémon X and Y, the upcoming Nintendo 3DS installment in the insanely popular franchise of games and cartoons, introduces a new type of pocket monster: Fairy-type. Nintendo announced the news during its Electronic Entertainment Expo Nintendo Direct stream today.
Plenty of new Pokémon will be part of this new type, including a new Eevee evolution [above], but Nintendo is shuffling some preexisting critters, like Jigglypuff, into the category. Fairy moves are supereffective against Dragon Pokémon, a group that had previously had few weaknesses.
Pokémon X and Y unleash this new breed worldwide on Oct. 12.
This is the first time developer Game Freak has added a new type to the series since Pokémon Gold and Silver, the second-generation installment for the Game Boy Color that came out back in 1999. Those installments added Steel and Dark-types.
You can see the full trailer Nintendo released today below, which also shows a new feature that players can use to pet their Pokémon in a way that’s reminiscent of Nintendogs.
Nintendo is hosting a Pokémon E3 event tonight. We’ll bring you more coverage then.
