Recursor.TV unveils science fiction video platform for indie filmmakers

Recursor.TV is unveiling its online media platform and website for independent science fiction filmmakers.

Los Angeles-based Recursor is also announcing its first original video series, Nina Unlocked, featuring actress, singer, producer, and YouTuber Lana McKissack. It is an example of “modern science fiction,” the kind of content that Recursor is curating on the site.

“This is a golden era for hard science fiction, and we’re thrilled to be premiering the first video platform devoted to the genre,” said E.J. Kavounas, CEO of Recursor, in a statement. “Recursor showcases cutting-edge work by independent filmmakers and artists in an environment designed to deeply engage audiences.”

The “modern science fiction” approach features narratives premised in a world much like our own but altered in a specific, plausible way to realistically dramatize the experience of humanity facing the unknown. The curated content will include short online films and indie science fiction films. Recursor is meant to be an “immersive platform” for fans of science fiction. It will have genres such as military science fiction, post-apocalyptic worlds, alien encounters, cyberpunk noir, and others.

“While other platforms cater to audiences of horror, comedy, and animation, we felt that despite the enormous passion people have for high-quality science fiction, there was no dedicated alternative for these viewers,” Kavounas added. “We are enabling the accessibility to powerful creative tools for talented filmmakers who are creating brilliant science fiction all over the world.”

Recursor.TV will showcase the first episodes of Nina Unlocked, a quirky, character-driven interview series. McKissack plays Nina, a super-intelligent android and former robotic assassin who lost most of her memory after somehow rebooting herself. Free of military control and suffering from memory loss, using her unique machine-like logic, Nina conducts interviews with a range of real guests — including prominent scientists, authors, and filmmakers — as she tries to understand the mystery of her creation. Additional episodes of Nina Unlocked will be released later this fall.

The company has raised angel funding, and it has fewer than 10 employees. There are big rivals in the space, such as Syfy, but Recursor.TV’s focus on modern science fiction is unique, the company said. Kavounas, Edouard de Lachomette and Steve Tao founded the company earlier this year.

Recursor will also be launching a crowd-sourced creative contest to open up idea submissions for the next original Recursor film. More information on the contest will be released in the coming weeks and months.
