Owing to the success of the remake released last year, Guybrush Threepwood will once again set out for legendary treasures with the special edition treatment. This year at E3, developer LucasArts released a few new details about the enhancements to their enhancement.

A lot of work has been done all around to improve the features implemented in the previous special edition, all of which, it seems, can also be tailored to your preferences via toggle switches in the options menu. But LucasArts has addressed two of what it says were the biggest requests from fans: making the stellar voice work, from the likes of The Curse of Monkey Island‘s Dominic Armant, available in the classic view, and updating the animations.

The original special edition animation artwork was essentially laid on-top of the original’s, giving Guybrush about 8 frames of animation. Not only has this been pushed up to 24 frames for the sequel, but new animations for the backgrounds and characters have been introduced: for one, Guybrush will now fidget and pick his nose if you leave him alone for a few seconds. LucasArts stated that they wanted to breathe some more character into the aged, often static, game world, and make the environment feel more alive.

In addition to these features, players will directly control Guybrush this time, and interaction with the environment has been completely revised for newcomers. Actions such as talking, opening, etc, are now made using a simple radial menu that pops-up, instead of the previous, cumbersome- but-undeniably-authentic, verb-grid selection.

The developer commentary, over an hour of audio that features Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer, and Dave Grossman talking about their experience developing Monkey Island, has been revealed to be available in-game, on a room-by-room basis, changing as characters are introduced to a scene or once a puzzle is completed.

The Secret of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge Special Edition will be released July 7th, 2010 for XBLA, PSN, iPhone, iPad, and Windows PCs.
