Rocket League on Xbox One won’t allow cross-platform matchmaking

The breakout hit of 2015 is still going strong in 2017.

Xbox One gamers won’t be playing Rocket League alongside their PlayStation 4 and PC counterparts.

The popular driving-and-soccer hybrid — announced for Xbox One at last night’s Game Awards — won’t feature cross-platform matchmaking between XBox One players and those on other systems. At present, PlayStation 4 and PC gamers can play the game together on the same servers, but developer Psyonix explained via Twitter that Xbox One gamers won’t be part of that same community.

“The Xbox platform doesn’t allow for cross-play matchmaking between other systems as a general practice across all titles,” read the Tweet from the official Rocket League account. So while it’s great that more gamers will get to experience one of the most entertaining multiplayer titles of 2015, it’s a shame that they won’t be part of the larger, already established, playing community.

Rocket League was one of this year’s big surprise hits, having seemingly come out of nowhere to dominate PC sales on the Steam platform back in July. It was also one of the free games for subscribers to the PlayStation Plus service, which helped boost its popularity.
