Role-playing game classic Dragon Quest IV coming to iOS in the U.S.

Dragon Quest fans, rejoice! The Chapters of the Chosen have chosen a new U.S. platform.

Revealed as part of its lineup for the upcoming Gamescom trade show in Cologne, Germany, later this month, Square Enix revealed that the iOS version of the role-playing classic Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen is coming to the U.S., as originally spotted by Destructoid. We don’t currently have a release date.

Dragon Quest is one of the biggest RPG franchises in the world, especially in its home country of Japan. The original version of Dragon Quest IV launched on the Nintendo Famicom back in 1990 (we got our U.S. version, called Dragon Warrior IV, on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992).

This isn’t the first time Chapters of the Chosen got ported to a new system. Developer Enix (before it merged with rival Squaresoft) made an updated version for the PlayStation in 2001. That upgrade never made it to the U.S., but we did get another enhanced port, this time for the portable Nintendo DS, in 2008.

The iOS version takes after the DS port, which included a new translation script, improved graphics, and new content. Square Enix first released iOS and Android versions of Dragon Quest IV in Japan last April. We don’t currently have confirmation of the Android version coming to the U.S., but most Square Enix mobile release, including Dragon Quest VIII and Final Fantasy VI, also come out for that platform.
