Pass the Scooby Snacks, Shaggy.
Warner Bros. combats the imminent release of Disney Infinity and Skylanders SuperChargers by highlighting its big brands for Lego Dimensions in a new Scooby-Doo trailer. The clip stars Scooby, Shaggy, and the Mystery Machine from the cartoon show. The levels take on a hand-drawn look to match and re-create classic moments from the series.
As with previous Lego Dimensions trailers, fans see a short sequence of the characters receiving and assembling the Toy Pad in person. In this case, it appears to be GlaDOS from Portal who has delivered the mysterious package — again underlining the deep level of brand crossover in the game.
In the game proper, we see Scooby and Shaggy run from mummies, hide in bookcases, and investigate haunted mansions and disused circuses. In one classic moment, the two dress as old women to avoid a ghoul from noticing them.
These shenanigans are part of one of the main campaign’s 14 chapters, one for each of the included franchises. Scooby and Shaggy cross over into different locations, including the Ghostbusters’ firehouse HQ, the Simpsons’ living room, and Back to the Future’s Hill Valley.
While players can play through the Scooby-Doo campaign levels with just the Starter Pack, taking control of the characters requires an additional purchase of the Scooby-Doo team pack. This unlocks not only the characters themselves but also Scooby’s open-world level. Each of the franchises in Lego Dimensions is supported by a similar open world that requires just one minifigure from the brand to access it.
Additionally, some of the franchises have level expansions packs. In addition to unlocking the characters and open worlds, these also add one extra level to the main adventure.
Lego Dimensions releases on September 27 in the U.S. for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, PS3, and Xbox 360.
