Sega is disappointed. Now it knows how its fans have felt for the last decade.
The Japanese game publisher released a report on its financial year that ended on March 31. In it, Sega expressed disappointment with software sales, specifically pointing out Alien: Isolation and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal on 3DS and Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric on Wii U. Alien sold 2.11 million copies, while both Sonic Boom games only sold a combined 620,000.
Overall, Sega earned $925.7 million in revenue, up 11 percent from the previous year. The company attributed the growth to the gradual recovery of the Japanese economy. It also said that sales of mobile and digital software remained strong but did not provide exact numbers.
That seems a little harsh for Alien: Isolation, a survival-horror game that came out on for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Steam. It reminds us of when Square Enix was upset with Tomb Raider sales, even though it moved millions of copies. On the other hand, a combined 620,000 copies sold for two Sonic games is pretty weak. Of course, both games received extremely poor reviews.
