Street Fighter characters in a strategy game? Why not?

The Japanese e-commerce powerhouse DeNA is licensing Capcom‘s Street Fighter cast to appear in their character based strategy game, Blood Brothers 2 (available now for iOS and Android). M.Bison, Ryu, and Cammy will make their appearances in Blood Brothers 2 on December 3, with the promise of more characters to follow.

This seems like a mutually advantageous pairing, since Street Fighter is a big franchise, especially in the west, which may draw more players to DeNA’s Blood Brothers 2 pool of users. Capcom is going to get a boost in hyping their Street Fighter brand to another large group of people in its lead up to Street Fighter V.

How the hell did a bunch of Street Fighter characters wind up in a fantasy sword-and-sorcery universe? Are you wearing your yoga pants? ‘Cause we’re about to do some serious narrative stretching.

M.Bison, main villain of the Street Fighter universe, has accidentally slipped into the fantasy world of Arnashia (the setting of Blood Brothers 2). The evil dictator sees the amazing inhabitants of this new and strange world as potential recruits for his Shadowloo terrorist organization back on Earth. So M.Bison begins forming an army based off of the world’s fantastic and deadly creatures while working out how to get back home.

Some of the residents of Arnashia take issue with this plan, so they open up their own dimensional portal, kidnap Ryu, and task him with the job of taking M.Bison down. So the plan is to recruit a homeless (and slightly insane) roaming Karate man and pin on him all the world’s hope that he can stop a mad dictator.

I don’t think we are dealing with the brightest tactical minds in the multiverse.

To celebrate this series crossover event, DeNA is going to hold a contest on their Blood Brothers 2 site, running from now until December 2nd. Participants will have a chance to score an iPad Pro, a collector’s edition of Street Fighter V for the PlayStation 4, and a Chun-li action figure.
