Someone hand Nintendo that hammer from Donkey Kong, because it needs to do some work on its Super Mario Maker servers.
The engineers at Nintendo are heading into what I’m sure is a twisted underground cavern filled with pipes and goombas to fix up its servers for the Wii U’s Super Mario Maker this evening. This will ensure the level-making game’s online features continue to function properly, but it also means that you may have trouble getting online to play. The maintenance window begins tonight (Monday, October 5) at 5 p.m. Pacific (8 p.m. Eastern). Nintendo plans to finish working on the servers at 7 p.m. Pacific (10 p.m. Eastern). Nintendo has also regularly performed maintenance on its games like Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, which is one of the reasons fans can’t get enough of it.

With that game acting as a guide, it’s easy to start believing that tonight’s maintenance is a precursor to Nintendo unleashing new Super Mario Maker content on players.
Recently, a developer who goes by the Twitter handle NWPlayer123, who also specializes in hacking Nintendo games, found some evidence that the publisher has hidden some extra content on the Super Mario Maker disc.

You can see in the above tweet that Nintendo developers have already created entries for an item called “sun” for the Super Mario Bros. 3 creation set. That seems like an obvious reference to the infamous “angry sun” enemy from World 2 of the original Super Mario Bros. 3. It’s also possible that the sun was cut for a reason, and Nintendo might have no plans to bring it back. But Super Mario Maker seems perfect for extra, paid downloadable content. So hopefully we’ll hear something about this soon.
