Super Mario Maker patch removes item-unlock delay — now 15 minutes, not 1 day, per batch

You'll no longer have to wait a few days before getting certain tools.

You hated it before even trying it, and Nintendo heard you.

You no longer have to wait nine days to unlock every item in Super Mario Maker (or use this now worthless guide I made to help you subvert that). That’s because Nintendo just patched its level-building game to versions 1.0.1.

The key tweak here is that you only need to mess around with making stages for about 15 minutes before it will deliver a new set of tools and items. Previously, you had to go an entire day before Super Mario Maker would actually let you use those items. And then it would take another 24 hours before you got the next bundle. That process would continue for a total of nine days.

Now, it looks like dedicated builders will have the opportunity to unlock everything in a matter of hours.

Nintendo likely made this change to Super Mario Maker as a response to the feedback it got from fans. When the publisher originally announced the 9 day delay, many people expressed frustration and even anger that they wouldn’t have the option to make use of every item immediately. The argument was that people shouldn’t have to plow through obstacles to take advantage of every capability in one of the game’s main modes after spending $60.

But, as I said in my review, I actually liked the delay. Limitations are always breed creative solutions, and I think Nintendo knows that. And by giving players limitations, the developer was actually giving you something else: a chance to defy those limitations and prove how capable and smart you are despite them.
