It’s out in Japan, but North American gamers still have to wait until Oct. 3 before Super Smash Bros. for 3DS goes on sale. But you can get a taste right now.
Nintendo has unleashed a demo for everyone on its eShop digital-distribution store. Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is a four-player fighting game where you take control of Mario, Peach, and other Nintendo characters. People who own the 3DS handheld console can hop online and start downloading the demo. This trial should give you a good idea of what you’re in store for.

They can duke it out on one playable stage. While Smash Bros. 3DS features online multiplayer, this version only works locally. So you’ll only get to beat up your friends if you can all get together in the same place.
You should also know that the demo is limited to only 30 uses. After that, you won’t have access to it anymore. Hopefully, that’s enough to get you through the next few weeks.
Some have already spent the last few days playing the demo. Nintendo sent out codes to a select number of fans who are members of its Club Nintendo loyalty program. The publisher realizes that this is one of its biggest releases of the year, and so it’s doing everything it can to build up the buzz. The limited codes were so popular that some were selling for around $20 or more on eBay.
Those codes, which are no essentially useless, are still available for around $1 to $2 on the online-auction site.
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is just the first version of the game Nintendo is releasing in the near future. It also has Super Smash Bros. for Wii U coming to its home console “this holiday.” The company still hasn’t nailed down a solid release date for the Wii U release. That’s possibly because Nintendo doesn’t want to draw attention away from the portable game before it’s out. Unsubstantiated rumors and speculation have Wii U Smash coming any time between Nov. 21 and early 2015.
