Handheld gaming’s still fighting against the seemingly unstoppable rise of the smartphone, and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS threw a mighty punch this weekend.

Despite gloomy predictions for the future of the handheld market, which Juniper Research says will be dead by 2019, Nintendo’s 3DS console is still performing well. Fighting game Super Smash Bros. released for the 3DS and 2DS in Japan on Friday, and Nintendo has revealed that it’s already sold over 1 million copies.

That figure includes both retail and digital sales of the highly anticipated title. It puts Super Smash Bros. in a select group of 3DS games — including role-playing big-hitters Pokémon X and Y and Monster Hunter 4 — that have sold a million copies within a week of release.

Nintendo gave select Club Nintendo members in the U.S. a chance to try the Super Smash Bros. demo last Friday. Everyone will get access to it on Sept. 19.

The 3DS has sold over 43 million units worldwide, and Nintendo hopes that its continued success can help return the gaming giant to profitability this year.

Super Smash Bros. is also due to launch on Wii U later this year, but Nintendo hasn’t announced a release date yet.
