Nintendo is up for another round of Smash.
The company revealed today that its next Nintendo Direct video presentation will focus on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS (often collectively refereed to as Smash 4 by fans). Nintendo’s website states that this will be the final video presentation focusing on the games, which came out over a year ago. It also notes that series director Masahiro Sakurai will give more details on Cloud, the Final Fantasy VII character recently announced as downloadable content for the fighter, and more.
It’s likely we could learn a release date for Cloud, but we could see Nintendo announce additional fighters and stages for Smash 4. The previous wave of DLC added three fighters: Ryu, the Street Fighter star who made his Smash Bros. debut, along with returning characters Lucas (from Mother 3) and Roy (from Fire Emblem). Maybe we’ll see another duo of returning roster members to accompany Cloud’s release.
It is interesting that Nintendo goes out of its way to state that this will be the last Nintendo Direct for Smash 4. The nature of DLC means that the company can continue to release new content for the games indefinitely, but this news could mean that Nintendo is winding development down (maybe to focus on other things, like a new version of Smash Bros. for the mysterious NX, Nintendo’s next system.)
