Keith Shepherd, the founder of Imangi Studios, made the announcement today on his Twitter account. The title was already a success on iOS devices, where Apple users have downloaded over 36 million copies of the app. The immense popularity of the game prompted the Washington D.C. studio to create an Android version, which received over a million downloads during its first three days of availability.

Temple Run originally cost 99 cents on the Apple App Store but saw a massive increase in popularity and revenue when it went free-to-play.

Temple Run falls into the endless runner genre, with a top down third person point of view. The main character, and Indiana Jones type, is running from some scary monkeys from the moment the game is launched. Players swipe left, right, up, and down to turn, jump and slide, and tilt their iPhone or iPad to collect coins along the way. It’s all great fun, and very much a mobile game.

The game is the product of husband-and-wife team Natalia Luckyanova and Shepherd. They did their first iPhone game in July 2008 and it did well enough to support a real full-time business.
