Sunset Overdrive

We all know, deep down, that gritty first-person shooters are getting kind of tired, but Insomniac Games reveled in making the point in its own sassy, technicolor way at this year’s E3.

Gleefully breaking the fourth wall, open-world shooter Sunset Overdrive’s protagonist asks us, “Can you save Sunset City? Can you? For the love of god, can you?” before answering his own question:  “Of course you can — it’s a f***ing video game!”

This War of Mine

A brave trailer for a game that shows the side of war we rarely see. Emir Cerimovic is a survivor of the siege of Sarejevo — the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. His description of life as a 9-year-old boy echoes profoundly with the sad, moving game inspired by his and other war survivors’ stories.

Assassin’s Creed: Unity

The game might have suffered with framerate issues and scary graphical bugs at launch, but Assassin’s Creed Unity’s cinematic trailer is a thing of beauty. Starting with a eagle soaring majestically across the Paris skyline, it ends with an epic slow-motion battle between the people of the city and the establishment.

Bloodborne

From Software’s trailer for next year’s PlayStation 4 exclusive role-playing adventure is magnificently dark and positively dripping with menace. It’s a perfect introduction to Bloodborne’s horror-filled gothic world.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare livened up a tired genre this year with its hi-tech take on the first-person shooter. This live action trailer shows off some of that tech in style, along with the second appearance by a goat in our round-up.

Forza 2 Horizon

Starting with CGI footage of an uneventful ride around a slot-car circuit, this trailer soon breaks out into the real world and starts looking more Italian Job than Scalextric. The trolling VW Beetle at 1:18 is a great little touch of humor, too, bringing back memories of Herbie (for those of a certain age).
