Check out all of our Best of 2014 coverage here and Worst of 2014 coverage here.
I’m a sucker for great game trailers, and this year’s seen some fantastic examples of how to grab your audience and not let them go.

No matter how they did it, though, all the trailers collected below — GamesBeat’s picks of 2014 — are worth another watch.

Valiant Hearts
Valiant Hearts is a little puzzle game with a big heart. It follows five characters on the battlefields of World War I as their personal stories intertwine. This moving trailer is a perfect introduction to the game voted Best Narrative and Game for Change at this year’s Game Awards in Las Vegas.
Dead Island 2
It’s hard to top the spectacular original Dead Island trailers, but Techland’s had a damn fine go. The blissful ignorance of this headphone-wearing Muscle Beach runner juxtaposes beautifully with the mayhem happening all around him, and his rapid zombification unfolds in glorious close-up detail.

Goat Simulator
The launch trailer for the quirky Goat Simulator playfully riffs on the amazing, emotional Dead Island announcement that made headlines back in 2011. Instead of tugging at your heartstrings, though, Coffee Stain Studios cleverly shows off the goofy physics and outright insanity of its surprise hit.

The Division
A disease spreads across America, starting on Black Friday and causing total societal collapse in just five days. That’s the apocalyptic premise for Tom Clancy’s The Division, the keenly anticipated massively multiplayer third-person shooter heading to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC next year. This cinematic trailer uses the city itself as its star, cleverly showing how precariously balanced our high-tech, high-consumption lifestyle really is.
The Legend of Zelda Wii U
This reveal trailer nearly blew up the Internet when it debuted at 2014’s E3 gaming conference. We don’t even know the name of Nintendo’s new action role-playing game — and some people seem confused about the identity of its star — but we do know that it’s going to look incredible.

Overwatch
Blizzard Entertainment took a Pixar-like approach to this animated trailer for its new team-based shooter, due to enter beta testing next year. I just wish it had found a British voice actress for the female hero, Tracer; the cringeworthy attempt at a cockney accent rivals Dick Van Dyke’s performance in Mary Poppins.
Sunset Overdrive
We all know, deep down, that gritty first-person shooters are getting kind of tired, but Insomniac Games reveled in making the point in its own sassy, technicolor way at this year’s E3.

Gleefully breaking the fourth wall, open-world shooter Sunset Overdrive’s protagonist asks us, “Can you save Sunset City? Can you? For the love of god, can you?” before answering his own question: “Of course you can — it’s a f***ing video game!”

This War of Mine
A brave trailer for a game that shows the side of war we rarely see. Emir Cerimovic is a survivor of the siege of Sarejevo — the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare. His description of life as a 9-year-old boy echoes profoundly with the sad, moving game inspired by his and other war survivors’ stories.

Assassin’s Creed: Unity
The game might have suffered with framerate issues and scary graphical bugs at launch, but Assassin’s Creed Unity’s cinematic trailer is a thing of beauty. Starting with a eagle soaring majestically across the Paris skyline, it ends with an epic slow-motion battle between the people of the city and the establishment.
Bloodborne
From Software’s trailer for next year’s PlayStation 4 exclusive role-playing adventure is magnificently dark and positively dripping with menace. It’s a perfect introduction to Bloodborne’s horror-filled gothic world.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare livened up a tired genre this year with its hi-tech take on the first-person shooter. This live action trailer shows off some of that tech in style, along with the second appearance by a goat in our round-up.

Forza 2 Horizon
Starting with CGI footage of an uneventful ride around a slot-car circuit, this trailer soon breaks out into the real world and starts looking more Italian Job than Scalextric. The trolling VW Beetle at 1:18 is a great little touch of humor, too, bringing back memories of Herbie (for those of a certain age).
