These The Evil Within codes will stop time, unlock god mode, and enable 60fps

The Evil Within is a return to glory for Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, but these PC “cheat” codes for the survival-horror game are great for the faint-hearted (or anyone wanting to goof around).

Publisher Bethesda Softworks said last week that it’s possible to increase the framerate of The Evil Within from 30 frames per second to 60 frames per second on PC using debug commands, which enable you to alter aspects of the game. The 60fps benchmark is the gold standard for today’s triple-A titles, so an initial lock at 30fps disappointed many gamers.

Any PC players who want to push their hardware further can now do so, thanks to the debug commands revealed by Bethesda on its official forum. Additionally, it’s possible to mess around with plenty of other things, including activating an indestructible “god mode,” playing with infinite ammo, and stopping and starting time. It sounds pretty fun although Bethesda warns players that they mess around at their own peril.

“We promised them, and here they are!” said Bethesda global community lead Matt Grandstaff. “Please note that using debug console commands is unsupported by Bethesda and our customer service team.”

Here are the full instructions for using the codes, as laid out by Grandstaff:

To access the debug console

  • In Steam, right click on The Evil Within and select “Properties.” Under the General tab, hit “Set launch options.”
  • Enter this code to unlock the console: +com_allowconsole 1
  • Once the game has launched, hit the “Insert” key to bring down the developer console.

The debug commands

R_swapinterval <NUMBER>

  • Sets the fps [frames per second] lock. Note that the numbers below are negative.
  • -2: This is the default, set to 30fps. This is the officially supported framerate.
  • -1: This sets the fps limit to 60. Fully playable although there may be quirks (we’re going to fix these).
  • 0: This fully unlocks the fps. We do not recommend playing above 60. We will not fix any issues above 60.

God

  • God mode. You are effectively invincible, and certain enemy kill moves will not be used against you (Laura, for example, will not jump on you).

Noclip

  • Allows you to walk through walls.

G_infiniteammo

  • Unlimited ammo (provided you have at least one bullet when you enable this).

G_stoptime 1

  • Stops time. Note there is a bug right now where using this command causes a UI [user interface] element to appear onscreen. We’re looking to fix that in the near future.

G_stoptime 0

  • Re-enables time.

Toggledebugcamera

  • Separates the camera from Sebastian.

R_forceaspectratio <NUMBER>

  • Sets the aspect ratio. Default is 2.5, which is our official aspect ratio.
  • 0 is full screen but not ideal. 1.8 or 2 is probably most comfortable for those who don’t want bars.

Com_showFPS

  • Turns on id’s native fps counter.

Startslowmotion2

  • Slows down time.

Stopslowmotion

  • Disables slow motion.
