Nintendo surprised just about everyone today with the announcement of the Nintendo 2DS, a new, cheaper, and 3D-less version of its popular 3DS handheld. We decided to ask our Twitter and Facebook followers what they thought of the new hardware. Below are some of your responses.
Also, if you have an opinion on the 2DS that you can’t express in 140 characters or fewer, then try writing a story for GamesBeat Unfiltered. Check out our “about” page and find out how to make an account if you haven’t already. And why not make it a funny story and give yourself a chance to win a free game while you’re at it?
Anyway, here’s a sampling of some of your comments:
@GamesBeat The form factor is baffling to me. It demands use of a bag. I guess it’s for school kids and they’d have school bags anyway?

@GamesBeat it’s hideous, and a whole lot of disappointed kids are going to get a 2DS for Xmas b/c of it’s price point. — Matt Wetsel (@TilEDsAreNoMore) August 28, 2013
@GamesBeat Looks way comfier due to the re-positioned controls, and I hate the 3D anyway. Not gonna fit in my pocket, though.

@GamesBeat it’s classic Nintendo. A means to an end. A gain to be made from a small hardware niche no-one else has chased. Smart, short term — Robbie Cooke (@RC_ephemeral) August 28, 2013
@GamesBeat It’s not for me, because I have a 3DS XL, but I’m glad it will exist for those who want to enjoy 3DS software by any legal means.

@GamesBeat It’s a smart move! No 3D + affordability will appeal to a broader audience. Looks reminiscent of the Game Boy era. — Erich Schuler (@erichschuler) August 28, 2013
@GamesBeat Perfect for a kid, not for me though.

@GamesBeat it is ridiculous. The concept is good, the actual design is awful.

@GamesBeat I wish it was bigger, like OED huge — Shane Ryan Kelly (@ShaneRKelly) August 29, 2013
@GamesBeat I think it fills a niche for younger Pokémaniacs whose parents were leery of the under 7 warnings on the 3DS. — Bezlo (@Bezlo) August 29, 2013
@GamesBeat I’m not getting it, I would rather have a 3DS

And here are some thoughts from Facebook:
Phuc-An Nguyen: Back to the drawing board unless your key audience are 7-12 year old kids.
Douglas Mercier: Looks like a kid designed it.
Tim Foerst: Yeah, I’m not quite sure why they made their portable system less portable. The price is right though.
Tristan Damen: Concept and price are great. Design – not so much.
Thanks to everyone who responded!
