Nintendo is giving Zelda fans another HD link to the past.
The gaming company announced today during its Nintendo Direct streaming event that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is getting an upgraded rerelease for Wii U. It comes out March 6. This will give fans something to play while they wait for the next new console release in the series, which we haven’t heard much about in the last year. This makes some think that it’s moving platforms, from the Wii U to Nintendo’s upcoming, mysterious NX. However, Nintendo still called the new game a Wii U release for 2016 in the stream today.
Coincidentally, Twilight Princess did some platform shuffling of its own. It was originally designed for the GameCube, but it ended up coming out for both that aging console and the (just launched) Wii in 2006. Twilight Princess is notable for its darker atmosphere compared to most Zelda games. It also gives Link the ability to turn into a wolf.
Nintendo is also making a Wolf Link Amiibo figure. It and previous Zelda Amiibo will work with Twilight Princess. In fact, data stored on the Wolf Link Amiibo will work with the upcoming new game. A version of Twilight Princess HD will come bundled with the Wolf Link figure.
Nintendo already released an HD version of Twilight Princess’ predecessor, The Wind Waker, on the Wii U. Despite the artistic differences (Wind Waker had a cartoon-like look), they both ran on the same engine.
