The studio responsible for Saints Row has a new game, and it’s sticking to its strength of comical open worlds while also expanding that background of that franchise.

Agents of Mayhem is developer Volition’s next project, and it is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2017. Following up its latest Saints Row releases, an upgraded version of Saints Row IV and the standalone expansion Gat Out of Hell, the developer is now introducing a new property. Agents of Mayhem still shares a universe with Saints Row, but it features its own unique comic-book-style characters and storylines. Volition and publisher Deep Silver, which owns the studio, are showing off the game now as the gaming industry — which is worth $99.6 billion — prepares to come together in Los Angeles next week for the Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show.

Agents of Mayhem (the agency is the Multinational Agency for Hunting Evil Masterminds) is a take on superheroes. It tells the story of a crew of superagents who must take on LEGION (the League of Evil Gentlemen Intent on Obliterating Nations). Set in Seoul, “The City of Tomorrow,” the open-world action will have players swapping between a team of megapowerful agents who are nearly as destructive as the evil coalition they are trying to stop.

The three main characters that Volition is showing off so far are Fortune, Hardtack, and Hollywood. Fortune is a Brazilian short-range specialist with dual energy pistols. Hardtack has a harpoon and is also great in close quarters. Hollywood is your assault guy and is bets from medium range. You can instantly swap between the characters to take on certain challenges with the best hero for the job. See that concept in the announcement trailer below:

GamesBeat is planning to check out Agents of Mayhem at E3 next week, and we’ll have more on the game following a closer look at it. For now, however, it looks fun as hell and a clever take on the superhero-ification of entertainment following the success of recent comic-book films like the Marvel movies.
