The top 10 games of ‘Pitch us in one Tweet’ (#10: Oh Snap!)

I used to make fun of my friends who use Twitter as their primary means of interacting with each other. (“You have email, you dorks!” I’d tell them.) But I’m starting to get it.

We recently asked indie game developers to “Pitch us in one Tweet.” The big idea was that, if we like your short-form sell, we will write about your product on GamesBeat. We got a ton of responses — many more than we were hoping for. But the best part: We didn’t get a bunch of long-winded emails or press releases. Because of Twitter, everything was quick and to the point. We ought to do all of our editorial work through 140-character spurts of communication!

Well, it took us longer than expected, but we finally narrowed down our finalists to a top 10. (We had too many fun submissions to keep it a top three to five as we had originally planned.) For the next two weeks, we’ll be counting down these top 10, introducing our readers to a new indie game each day. We’re not necessarily promising you that they’re all great (though, from our hands-on time with them, some definitely are ). All we can say for sure is these were clever, intriguing, or downright funny pitches that made us want to take a closer look.

First up: #10

The game: Oh Snap! The Photo Charades Game

Availability: iOS (Canada, with the U.S. version to launch soon)

The pitch: @WubyuGames: “Oh Snap! The Photo Charades Game peeks out of stealth mode to make @DanShoeHsu a U-M football star.”

Why I picked this: Wubyu personalized this pitch for me. I don’t know if the developers always knew that I was a big University of Michigan football fan or if they only recently started stalking me for purposes of this contest. Either way, it caught my attention. In a creepy way.

What is it? Remember Draw Something, the Pictionary-like game for your touch-screen phone or tablet where your friends had to guess what crappy illustration you were trying to make with your fat fingers? Oh Snap! is a direct copycat, but instead of a blank canvas, you draw on photos — either ones already loaded in your phone or new ones that you can take within the app.

Is it good? Definitely. It’s much more fun taking a self-portrait through the mirror and drawing a baby bump over my belly than it is trying to make a stick figure look “P-R-E-G-N-A-N-T.” Obviously, you can get pretty creative scribbling on real photos or downloaded images, and you can have a little fun doodling on your friends’ faces, too. Just look at what Wubyu did with my mug shot above. (That’s a Michigan Wolverine helmet, in case you didn’t know.) You can see more examples below, as well.

Look for it: On iOS in the Canadian iTunes store now, with the U.S. version to come out very soon (maybe by the end of this week). Oh Snap! is also coming out for Android around mid-October.
