Titanfall will have at least 3 downloadable map packs — and a $25 season pass

Titanfall is a multiplayer shooter with a ton of buzz. Unsurprisingly, its publisher is planning to sell extra content and a season pass to capitalize on the excitement.

In the months following its March 11 release, Titanfall will get at least three map packs, according to developer Respawn. The anticipated online sci-fi title is coming to Xbox One, PC, and Xbox 360 (that version is due out March 25), and the level bundles will cost $10 on each platform. To save a few bucks, gamers may purchase access to all three packs upfront by getting a $25 season pass. PC gamers can also get the pass included in the $80 digital-deluxe version of Titanfall on publisher Electronic ArtsOrigin digital-distribution store.

For comparison, the $10 price for the DLC is $5 cheaper than what Activision charges for its Call of Duty map packs. That publisher promises four map packs for Ghosts, its latest release in the popular franchise, and it charges $50 for the season pass. Titanfall’s pricing and season-pass model is also similar to EA’s other shooter brand, Battlefield.

Zampella confirmed that Titanfall was getting DLC and a season pass in an interview with GameSpot yesterday. Respawn had previously created some confusion about this subject when it accidentally tweeted that the shooter would not have a season pass.

It turns out that whoever was running the game’s Twitter account that day conflated the idea of a season pass with an online pass, which is something that enables players to get online in games like World of Warcraft.

Season passes are a popular way for developers and publishers to generate more revenue from $60 products. Customers save a few bucks, but some content can take months before it’s available. That means gamers are potentially paying for something that they might even care about when it’s finally ready to play.
