Motorcycle platforming isn’t just for consoles and PC anymore. Ubisoft brought its Trials franchise to mobile, and it has already found a huge audience on that platform.
The French publisher revealed that gamers have already downloaded Trials Frontier for iOS devices more than 6 million times. The free-to-play release, which has players using their motorized bikes to overcome obstacles on a number of stages, debuted on Apple’s smartphones and tablets on April 10. After just a week, the app is the No. 3 most-downloaded iPhone game in the U.S., according to market-tracking firm App Annie. It is in the top 10 most downloaded in 90 other countries.
“We are thrilled with the success Trials Frontier has had in its first week of launch,” Ubisoft Mobile managing director Jean-Michel Detoc said. “Trials Frontier has the most first week downloads of any Ubisoft mobile title to date, and the thousands of players reviews we received are amazingly positive, an achievement RedLynx and Ubisoft are proud to announce. In order to keep players engaged, we have a robust post-launch content plan including new bikes and multiplayer modes that will allow players to continue exploring and enjoying the world of Trails Frontier.”
Frontier is also starting to make money for Ubisoft. The iPhone version is one of the top-100 highest-grossing apps in 74 countries. In the U.S., it is 41 and continues to climb. Players are spending money on in-game currency. The most popular purchase is a $3 “Special Starter Pack,” which includes a variety of virtual goods.

This isn’t the only new Trials game on the market. Ubisoft also released Trials Fusion for Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 4 earlier this week (it’s coming to PC soon). That $20 release is similar to other Trials titles. The publisher obviously wants to get Trials out in front of as many gamers as possible since Trials HD and Trials Evolution both sold extraordinarily well. In fact, Evolution, which debuted in 2012, set the record for the biggest first-day sales on Xbox Live Arcade.
That popularity even led to a number of Trials-style games on mobile that look and play like Ubisoft’s. Trial Extreme 3, which is a free-to-play clone of the Trials series, has tens of millions of downloads on iOS and Android.
Now, with Frontier, Ubisoft is hoping it can steal back some of that popularity. With 6 million downloads in the first week, it’s off to a good start. To keep the momentum, developer RedLynx is working on adding new bikes and missions to the app. The studio also plans to release a new multiplayer mode. Additionally, Trials Frontier will also debut on Android devices later this year.
