You have to really like racing to spring for this fancy wheel.
Peripheral maker Logitech G announced its first force-feedback racing wheels for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One today. The Logitech G29 Driving Force is the first wheel released for Sony’s PS4 since its launch in 2013, and it is also compatible with the PS3 and PC. The G920 is a similar build for Xbox One and PC, with slightly different features. The $400 racing controller (both models) answers the call of dedicated fans of the company’s Driving Force brand, which has been a console racing game staple since 2007.
Global online and retail availability begins in July 2015 for the Sony-friendly G29. The G920 comes in October, just ahead of the release of Turn 10’s hit racer Forza Motorsport 6 on Xbox One this Fall.
The G920 will be on display at the 2015 Electronic Entertainment Expo, taking place in Los Angeles next week.
The two wheels are pretty similar. They both feature dual-motor force feedback transmission to simulate the weight of a car and gears modeled after the gearing used in car transmissions. They’re a premium offering, complete with a hand-stitched leather-wrapped rim and a stainless steel pedal set. The floor pedal unit features a online system to mimic the performance of pressure-sensitive car brakes.
Platform-specific features
Logitech says that it worked with Sony for the past 18 months to deliver a fully licensed wheel. A 24-point selection dial lets users fine-tune driving setups in racing games — a similar control to previous PlayStation wheels from Logitech. Both the G920 and G29 feature paddle shifters, but the Sony version gets a LED indicator to signal the proper time to shift.
The Xbox One version permits an optional six-speed manual gear stick shifter with push-down reverse. Built-in clamps allow for the Driving Force Shifter to be mounted to the G920.
