Warframe’s biggest update of the year comes to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One

One of the best free-to-play games on consoles is getting new content today.

Warframe developer and publisher Digital Extremes announced today that The War Within, the biggest update of the year for its cooperative shooter, is out now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The new content already came out for the PC version earlier this year. The campaign lets players experience new quests, planets, and cinematics. Updates like this can bring back people to the free-to-play game and even attract new fans.

Warframe originally launched in 2014 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Since it was free and came out the same time as the new consoles, a lot early PlayStation 4 and Xbox One adopters downloaded the shooter. This update was already a hit on Steam, with its introduction bringing Warframe’s concurrent players on that platform to an all-time high of 68,530. Similar numbers aren’t available for the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions, nor do we know how Warframe’s console player base compares with other free-to-play games on those systems because Microsoft and Sony don’t release that info.

The War Within also adds new weapons, like the dual pistols Twin Rogga and the “sci-fi musket” Zarr. The new Assault mission type, meanwhile, has players focusing stealth while they attack an enemy base located in an asteroid field.
