A lot of games get made, but not all of them get released.

Extended technical beta footage of a canned Star Wars game has appeared online this week, reports Eurogamer. Star Wars: First Assault was an infantry-based first-person shooter for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in development at LucasArts when Disney bought up its parent company Lucasfilm. First Assault — which would have released as a downloadable title — eventually joined the big pile of games that never were, but we now have a chance to look at its environments and weapons in more detail.

According to Kotaku, the gameplay mechanics of First Assault could have eventually formed the basis of a new installment in the popular Battlefront series from LucasArts. Instead, that licence went to publisher Electronic Arts and developer DICE, who are bringing their own vision for Star Wars: Battlefront to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 17.

Star Wars: First Assault featured two teams of eight players — rebels versus Stormtroopers — facing off in familiar Star Wars settings, such as Tatooine.
