Forgot about pigs — Angry Birds need to worry about over 20 years of video game-based movie bombs

Sony released the first trailer for The Angry Birds Movie today, which you can watch below. The film, which comes out next summer, is an adaptation of the popular mobile game series. The original Angry Birds has 2.8 billion downloads across all types of platforms, according to developer Rovio. However, being a hit that big doesn’t ensure the movie will succeed. Even the mighty Super Mario Bros. became a stinker when turned into a film.

This is the first time a gaming series that created its name on mobile has made the big-screen transition, so maybe that difference can help The Angry Birds Movie avoid the mediocre fate of Prince of Persia, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, and Street Fighter (both of them). The trailer, which looks about as bland as most CG animated films, doesn’t exactly instill any confidence in us.

The franchise really needs a hit, too. Angry Birds 2 came out in July and has struggled to become the same mega-success as the original. Rovio is certainly hoping that a theatrical adaptation can help keep this brand popular.

Rovio announced the movie way back in 2012. It features voice-acting from stars like Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader, and Josh Gad (who also voiced Olaf in the animated megahit Frozen).
