Updated at 5:15 p.m. Pacific: Microsoft says it has everything up and running once again

You may run into some trouble playing games on an Xbox device today.

Xbox Live is down for a number of gamers, according to complaints on social media. This outage is preventing many from accessing online features like multiplayer for games like Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare or Destiny. Others are having trouble launching primarily single-player releases that rely on a connection to a third-party server.

Microsoft has updated its status website, and here’s what it says:

“Hey Xbox members, are you having issues signing in to Xbox Live? We are aware of this and are working hard to get it resolved ASAP! Thank you for being patient in the meantime. We’ll post another update when more information becomes available.”

We’ve also asked Microsoft for an update, and we’ll update this story with any new information.

The outage isn’t only affecting games. These issues are also preventing apps like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Instant Video from launching.

As always, these outages don’t impact everyone equally. It’s possible that you are online enjoying your Xbox Live Gold subscription as you read this — if that’s the case, then try not to get offline because the issue is often the worst when trying to log in.

This isn’t the first (or even fifth) time Xbox Live has gone down this year. Microsoft’s gaming service has regularly had days where it’s gone offline for hours at a time. This all comes after the service went offline completely on Christmas Day as the result of a cyberattack.

Of course, Xbox Live isn’t alone in facing these kinds of problems. Sony’s PlayStation Network has had at least as many outages so far in 2015.
