Edit: Xbox Live is back up and running.
It’s Friday night, and that means it’s time to play video games … unless you’re on Xbox.
Microsoft’s Xbox Live service is not working for a number of gamers, according to complaints on social media. This outage is preventing players from signing into Xbox Live to play games and boot up apps. So if you’re trying to play online multiplayer shooters like Call of Duty or Titanfall, you’re probably encountering an error. But even if you want to start primarily single-player games like the new Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, which only just launched today, you’re probably not able to do so because those games require a connection to online servers.
Microsoft has updated its support website with a statement:
“Hey Xbox members, are you having issues signing in to Xbox Live? We are aware of this issue and are working hard to get it resolved ASAP. Thank you for being patient in the meantime. We’ll post another update when more information becomes available.”
As always, it’s important to remember that these situations do not affect every gamer equally. It’s possible that you’ve had no issues signing into Xbox Live this evening, but the outage is reaching a large segment of Xbox One players.
This is, of course, not the first time Xbox Live has had connectivity problems. The service went down for an entire day on Christmas as the result of a cyberattack, but it has since gone offline repeatedly for shorter durations. Xbox Live isn’t alone in facing these outages. PlayStation Network has had at least as many issues since going offline for five days around Christmas due to the same cyberattack.
