Xbox One is a better media machine with its September update that's rolling out now

Microsoft’s engineers are back with another round of bug fixes and feature updates for the Xbox One.

The company revealed that it’s rolling out new features as part of the Xbox One’s September update. Starting today and continuing through the weekend, Xbox Ones around the world will start automatically downloading the latest features. This update adds a new media player, an improved Party app, and more.

While the September update will come packed with a number of small updates and bug fixes, Microsoft didn’t shy away from including some neat new features:

• Media Player app: One of the biggest new features is the capability to play your own media. After the update, you can download the Media Player to play movie and audio files off of a USB-connected device.
• Improved Party app: In an effort to streamline the experience of playing with friends, Microsoft is adding some options to the Party app. That includes the capability for the Party leader to change whether the an invitation is required and whether or not to kick out someone.
•  SmartGlass update: Microsoft’s Xbox One second-screen app for smartphones and tablets can now post messages to the Activity Feed from SmartGlass. Gamers can also use SmartGlass to start recording gameplay using GameDVR.

In addition to the big features, the capability to turn on the Xbox with your voice is heading to Australia, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Canada’s French-speaking areas. You can also set your Xbox One to boot directly to television, you can see how much bandwidth the system is using, and you can quickly delete multiple GameDVR recordings.

This is the latest in a long line of updates to the Xbox One. Microsoft has implemented a monthly schedule for its updates, and this has enabled the company to regularly add features throughout the year.

While today’s update includes a ton of new stuff, it is missing wireless media playback. Microsoft confirmed DNLA, which will enable the Xbox One to discover and stream media from a PC or other devices, is still coming. The company expects it to launch on Xbox One before the end of the year.
