We know nothing about Nintendo’s new gaming hardware other than its codename, NX, but you can already preorder it. That’s kind of nuts.
Nintendo surprised everyone yesterday by announcing a major partnership with mobile publisher DeNa. It also announced that it’s working on a new dedicated gaming platform but didn’t reveal an awful lot about it. While Nintendo’s push to mobile is probably the most interesting news for many people — Nintendo’s stock rose by 28 percent in the wake of the announcement — game retailers will be more keen to hear that Nintendo’s still interested in the dedicated console market. After all, that’s where stores make their money.
EB Games Australia announced via its Facebook page that it’s already taking preorders instore for the Nintendo NX, despite having no details of pricing, specs, or release timing — or even knowing what it actually is. Anyone speculating that the Nintendo NX will see the same levels of demand as the 100 million-selling Wii might be interesting in taking EB Games up on its offer. The rest of us will probably wait until we’re a little better informed.
“Nintendo have confirmed they’re developing a dedicated gaming platform with the codename NX! They’ve said more info will come next year,” said EB Games’ Facebook page, before adding, “The NX is now available for preorder instore.”
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata shared some limited information on the NX in a post-press conference Q&A session, but he really didn’t reveal that much.
“As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename NX,'” he said. “It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.”
