The makers of Cut the Rope are trying something new.

King of Thieves, ZeptoLab’s newest game, blends platforming and tower defense elements into a brand new property, available today on iOS platforms and coming soon to both the Amazon Appstore (Feb. 26) and Google Play (March 5). This new free-to-play intellectual property gives the Moscow-based mobile game maker a path into the midcore gaming segment, a rapidly growing part of the $25 billion mobile-games market.

The multiplayer title will have players breaking into enemy dungeons to steal gems and gold from other players. Defending players will set traps — tower-defense style — to protect their treasures from invaders. Leaderboards list the progress of all players worldwide, tracking to show who has amassed the most loot.

It’s a departure from the company’s casual puzzler Cut the Rope both in gameplay and complexity, but these new aspects may help ZeptoLab extend its audience to gamers looking for a bit more depth in their mobile games.

King of Thieves is the first of several new IPs that the company will launch this year.
