I don’t know much about card games beyond that two pair is better than one, but I do know that they make serious bank on mobile devices — and I’m not just talking about poker.
Social-game publisher Zynga has launched its second mobile card-battler worldwide today. War of the Fallen is available now on the iOS App Store and soon on Android’s Play market.
The digital collectible-card game is a bustling genre on mobile devices. Zynga hopes to set its latest game apart by matching in-depth gameplay with an original fantasy story.
“It’s rare to find a card-battler game that blends both accessibility and depth, and that’s what we’ve tried to deliver with War of the Fallen,” Zynga general manager Scott Koenigsberg said in a statement. “We hope players – both seasoned card battler veterans and those that are new to the genre – love the level of polish, customization and new social innovations we’ve included.”
Collectible-card games are hot on mobile right now. Developer Mobage topped the App Store and Google Play market for much of 2012 with its breakout hit Rage of Bahamut. That developer just produced another card battler based on the Marvel superheroes license, Marvel War of Heroes, which is now near the top of both mobile distribution stores.
Zynga previously released Ayakashi: Ghost Guild, a fantasy card-battler with Japanese aesthetics. That title is currently 47 on the top 100 highest-grossing Android games.
Since this is a Zynga title, War of the Fallen is introducing some extra social flair to the typical deck-versus-deck gameplay. The developers created something called Guild Force, which boosts a players card strength when they team up with others.
War of the Fallen is free. Zynga plans to release it in English, Spanish, German, French, traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. The card-game genre focuses on microtransactions and tends to bring in massive profits from Asian territories.
