50 Games in 2012 – #21 Rock of Ages [PSN] (Completed June 4th)

I've played my fair share of interesting games but Rock of Ages has to be considered quite unique. I had no real ambition to play the game but due to it being a PlayStation plus title I decided to download Rock of Ages and give it a go. Portraying an interesting take on tower defence I was intrigued and found my time with Rock of Ages to be quite enjoyable.

It's hard to exactly pin point what Rock of Ages is. The game sets you up in a Tower defence style where you place pieces to obstruct your enemies encounters but in Rock of Ages you also play the attacker. The main goal is to break down the enemies Castle Door with a large boulder. You do this by traversing a long path with your boulder while accumulating speed without hitting too many objects placed by the defender. With each hit your rock cracks and gradually grows smaller and less potent upon impact. Having a clear impact is vital to succeeding in a game. Rock of Ages setup turns out to be quite fun and offers a challenge a long with suspense when in tight situations vs the enemy.

At the core of Rock of Ages is a story campaign where you traverse time trying to run over histories greats of century's gone by. It's nothing deep but what it does do is offer a goofy narrative and continued landscape change as each level looks and plays vastly different. The campaign although fun had to be something I played on and off. I often found myself tired after a couple levels which led to me playing the game slowly rather than in one go. Regardless the main story of Rock of Ages played great in small doses my experience and the end proved to be both funny and satisfying.

Rock of Ages turned out to be a fun downloadable game that offered a new and fun take on a greatly used genre. Where Rock of Ages works is in it's ability to create suspenseful game moments where you frantically try and beat the enemy. Nothing beats a close match of any kind and Rock of Ages captures that competitive magic in it's gameplay formula. With a fun story mode to traverse and other game modes to mull through Rock of Ages is worth a play offering fun doses of hybrid Tower defence delight!
