Brothers till the end.

Brothers till the end.

Brothers till the end, and boy what an end it was. Gears of War 3, the last book in a trilogy of awesome videogame novels brought to us from the awesome guys at Epic. I call them videogame novels because they tell a story. A great story about a guy who has everything taken away from him. You don't read the story though, you play it. You guide Marcus Fenix in some pretty intense battles and along the way you meet some pretty cool people.

In the latest book you are playing through the ending. You have gotten all the foundation out of the way and its time to see how it ends. This game does it wonderfully, the environments, the characters, the bad guys all come to life. After the life changing events of Gears of War 2, the COG find them selves disbanded and the Locust are not just underground anymore. There are a lot of new enemies and a lot of new tactics to use to play the game. They added a charge attack you can do with the Retro Lancer that just makes you want to use that gun the whole game. There are new executions and new guns. Each of the executions have to be unlocked this time around, they are unlocked through kills in multiplayer which adds to the challenge of the game. Try carrying around a Mulcher a whole match without dying…. not so easy….

Another new feature is the Beast mode, where you control different Locusts and Lambent to take out the COGs and their fortifications (more on this later). Really cool mode, rather short though. They also added Arcade mode, which is basically the campaign but with a score counter and multiplier that add some seasoning to the game to make it a longer experience, as opposed to your "Beat it and Trade it" routine that normally goes on. Horde mode comes back with an added twist. Now you can earn money through kills and surviving each round. This cash that you earn allows you to build fortifications around a headquarters. You can build fences, turrets, and can even save up to get a Silverback!!

I know, I know you are waiting for the down side, well there isn't much. Overall the game is really fun. You can still get your buddies and talk smack while shot gunning people in the face and watching as their bloodied bits stain your boots. There are some things which I felt could have made the game even more fun then it already is. As I mentioned earlier, the Beast mode is fun but short, would have been really cool if you could rampage as a Beserker for more then just a round or two. On the arcade side it would have been cool if you could choose which character you wanted to be or if you could use the character that you picked as your default for online play. Those are just minor things though. New guns, new modes, and the ending to an awesome story. If I had to rate the game it would be an easy 5/5. If you love shooters and love online play this is the game for you. You don't have to take my word for it though. Check it out for your selves! Until next time this is PhilStop signing off.
