It may seem obvious at this point, but the PS3 has benefited from an immensely strong year following some top-notch game releases. With Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2, and now FFXIII being a few of the eclectic pack of games that have seen success on the console, the PS3 has finally accrued enough sales to become to the top-selling HD console in the world.

For worldwide hardware sales, the PS3 easily beat out the Xbox 360 by a difference of a staggering 345,905 units, for a grand total of 1,002,736. (The Xbox 360 sold 656,831 units during the week.) For comparison, that’s an increase of 330,229 units — nearly 50% —  from last week’s sales, which was only 672,507.

FFXIII‘s release in Japan had a strong showing right out of the gate with 1.5 million units sold within the first week. Interestingly, the game had the lowest debut numbers of any recent Final Fantasy title to date; however, it was enough to edge out Nintendo’s kung-fu grip on the top of the charts to become the number one most sold game worldwide.
