I have a dream. A dream that video games never evolved after SNES era of games. Now I know I'd be sad about the experiences we would miss but imagine the creative titles we would get too. It would probably be more efficient or correct to just say what if games took another ten years in the SNES period, but this is video games where there are fantasy worlds galore. Therefore I present a whole new world where games did not advance past the golden age of gaming.
I love modern games. I also love retro games. A few years ago if someone were to ask me which I liked more, I would've told them that I was an old-school gamer. Now there are so many new amazing games coming out from developers that need support for their hard work, I barely have time to go back and play my old favorites. For me NES and SNES were the golden age of gaming. Everything about the systems then were simple and developers could easily create masterpieces and put all of their focus on the content of the game. Just recently I downloaded a left 4 dead game on my computer that was made as it would be for NES. So what if gaming never evolved past the SNES system? Maybe updates to storage and capacity to the system but no graphical changes?
Instead of Mario 64, which was one of the best games of all time, what Mario incarnation would we have gotten if still limited to SNES? What different kinds of RPG's would have come out of the SNES had it stayed in the industry? Would we have Mass Effect style rpgs where we have choices that matter in the next few games? Maybe Assassin's Creed would have been a side scroller. We all know Final Fantasy would have eventually died a lot sooner then it will with our high def machines, or at least we hope. Also the much hated/loved Call of Duty probably would never have existed. I'd also like to imagine what Hideo Kojima's brilliant mind would've come up with for the Metal Gear Series if he had to get as creative as possible due to console restraints.
Your probably wondering where this is all going and I'll be honestly the answer to that is absolutely nowhere. It is just interesting to think of what could've been if games stayed in what I think of as the golden age in gaming. I see so many crazy cool mods or separate games on the computer such as fan made marios, the mirror's edge and portal side scroller remakes and I got to wondering how all or most modern games would be made on such restraints. We still have side scrollers and retro style games in the form of handhelds, PSN/XBLA games, pc games, and certain Wii games that are really cool such as Muramasa: Demon Blade on the Wii or Castlevania games on the DS.
So hit up the comments with anything from what games you think would be cool if made on SNES/NES, which games would be disasters, how games would be made on said consoles, or even if you’re on the call of duty love or call of duty hate team.
p.s. I actually do enjoy Final Fantasy games and hope they continue that was merely a joke.
