Origin of Hard Games

Contra

Contra, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden the list goes on.

Back in the early retro days there were no room on cartridges for:
– Good graphics
– Extra difficulty levels.
– Multiple Storylines

Japanese game Developers came up with a solution.
A single game which is easy to play but hard to master and everyone would have access to the same tools (the main character).

These games would be competitive and were designed to cause commotion which is in a way free advertising. The harder the game, the further the gap between the beginners and masters. Your rank was either your high score or which level or Boss you had defeated. Success felt more rewarding and would lead to bragging (commotion). On top of all this, these games were exciting and fun to watch especially by pros who would easily impress a crowd.

If you're into Hard games, here are my recommendations.
I would start with Retro games usually by Japanese Developers and then dive into classic FPS.
*While these will generally be difficult  I cannot guarantee your satisfaction with their difficulty.

– Contra

– Castlevania

– Megaman

– Mike Tyson's Punch Out!

– Metal Gear Solid

– Karate Kid

– Ninja Gaiden

– Double Dragon

– Legend Kage

FInally,
I stumbled upon these 2 games that are designed to be almost impossible to win.
I own both and guarantee they live up to their reputation.
I don't have the rights to distribute them but their free and can be found by google.
