Alex Gibney’s edgy Steve Jobs documentary hits theaters tomorrow, Sept. 4 (exclusive clip)

The new documentary Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine from Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney (Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief) offers a decidedly critical examination of Jobs’ life.

Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine is a rougher handling of the Jobs story than we’ve seen before. It plays on our basic discomfort with the idea that people can be, and often are, two things — light and dark, good and bad.

The challenge of making an accurate documentary  about a figure like Jobs is balancing those two sides in a way that reflects his real day-to-day personality. Based on people I know and whom I’ve interviewed about the man, I’d say the documentary plays a little heavily on Jobs’ dark side.

But Gibney is a skillful documentarian, and his Jobs movie is definitely worth a watch. It should come as no surprise that his take on the Jobs story is a bit darker and more skeptical than others we’ve seen. That’s part of Gibney’s eye, as evidenced by his last documentary, which offered a very critical look at the Church of Scientology.
