Pocket launches a premium service with permanent article archiving and better search

Pocket, a service that lets you save online articles to read later, finally has a way to make money.

The company announced Pocket Premium today, a new paid service that adds the ability to archive your Pocket saves permanently. The premium service also features vastly improved search capabilities. Pocket Premium costs $5 a month, or $45 a year (the exact same pricing as Evernote’s premium offering).

The new service comes just a few weeks after Pocket announced that its users have saved more than one billion items. Formerly called Read It Later, Pocket also competes with article saving service Instapaper.

As Pocket explains on its blog, the new permanent archiving service will keep items in your library even if they get deleted or changed online. Currently, Pocket’s apps cache the content from links on your device — if you want to read an older article that’s taken off the web, you’re out of luck. The new premium search feature can find content in your library by text, tags, author, and more.

Pocket Premium also automatically suggest tags for articles, which could be useful for keeping your library organized.

Like Evernote’s premium service, Pocket Premium will likely attract the company’s most hardcore fans. But it has the potential to be even more far-reaching as people want to save the content they love forever.

Pocket is also launching a few new products for all of its users: new browser extensions for adding articles and simpler tag management on the web and on Pocket’s mobile apps.
