Apple launched its glittery new Apple Music service yesterday, and, as the New York Times reported, two states were at the very same time investigating Apple’s negotiations with record label conglomerates.

Reports weeks ago said that Apple has tried to convince record labels to withdraw their support for free, ad-supported music services like those offered by Spotify and Deezer.

The attorneys general of New York and Connecticut have become interested, and want to know if Apple’s and the labels’ actions might violate antitrust laws.

Apple’s new music service costs $10 per month. There is no free, ad-supported option.

Universal Music Group said Tuesday it’s cooperating with the investigation, which has an industry-wide reach.
